Top tips for using your wood burner this winter

If you have recently invested in a wood-burning stove, you are undoubtedly looking forward to many cosy evenings sitting in front of a roaring fire this winter. Wood burners can be very mesmerising and are sure to keep you warm and toasty all winter long. To ensure you get the most out of your new fire, here are a few things to note.

Dry wood

Did you know that green wood is approximately 50% water? For every kilogram of green wood you put into your stove, you are essentially pouring on a whole pint of water; needless to say, this is not conducive to the creation of the most efficient fire.

Sourcing good quality wood can be tricky, but it is worth shopping around until you find the perfect supplier. There are many accreditation schemes that ensure you are purchasing responsibly sourced and thoroughly dry wood. You can, of course, dry wood yourself if you have the space available – just bear in mind that you will need to give it at least one summer to ensure it is thoroughly dry, which means this is quite a long process.

Air flow

Your fire needs air to burn properly and your primary goal should be to create a hot, fast-burning fire, which will be much more efficient than a slow-burning fire. You should never leave your stove door open, as you will find that much of the warmth will disappear straight up your chimney.

Defra approved

If you have considered investing in your fireplace this winter but have been put off because you live in a smoke free zone, it is well worth considering Defra approved stoves. To become Defra certified, stoves must undergo a thorough smoke particle emission test; as such, they will allow you to burn wood in smoke controlled areas.

Where can I find a Defra approved multi fuel wood burning stove?

Wood burning stoves have increased in popularity and are now widely available from a number of retailers. Make sure you look for the Defra approved logo, which has been widely adopted across the industry.

A wood-burning stove will be a wonderful addition to your home. Whichever model you choose, enjoy and make the most of it!
