At long last we are starting to turn a corner and Spring is on the way – the days are getting longer, and the earth is starting to wake up and warm up once more. This is a lovely time of the year to enjoy a walk in the countryside – temperatures can still be a little chilly so shop Aran sweaters to keep the chill at bay.
Here are a few signs of spring that you will be able to look out for on your country walks…
Hazel Catkins – The first tree to start showing signs of life after the long winter is the Hazel. This is easily recognisable at this time of the year as it’s catkins will be dangling from the branches, waiting for the strong March winds to blow them around and spread them out.
Daffodils – The flower that is a real sign of the springtime, these jolly yellow blooms are a joy to see and a true symbol that the worst of the winter has passed. Head to the Newent daffodil trail to see a fantastic display of beautiful daffodils brightening up the countryside.
Nesting Birds- As well as plant life, this is the time that the animals also start to become more active, and the bird world is a hive of activity at this time of the year. Look out for birds busily building nests, as well and get up early and head to the woods to hear the amazing dawn chorus as birds call to find a mate.
