Increasingly extreme weather could be damaging your roof

As the cold weather falls and winter descends, we should spend some time double checking the exterior of our homes to make sure everything is as it should be. The damage done in winter from bad weather can wreak havoc on the roof especially, so make sure you do not have a problem that, if left, could become far worse. Here are some interesting ways that unpredictable weather can damage your roof:

Debris

Falling debris that is able to damage the roof will mostly come from nearby tree branches. While the leaves and twigs will not cause much harm, if you have a tree near your property then high winds can cause branches or tree limbs to bow or snap and hit your roof. This will cause significant damage.

Algae

Algae and moss can also cause damage and will grow in the humid conditions of overhanging foliage. Collection of moisture is a problem caused by moss and algae and will leave dark spots on your roof, potentially rotting the shingles. Flying debris during a storm also can cause the gutters to become blocked.

Wind

Strong winds can blow tiles from a tiled roof. Once the storm has passed, be sure to check your roof for any missing tiles to see if repair or replacement is needed. Missing roof tiles can leave other vulnerable roofing materials exposed to the weather, which can cause damp and further damage.

Hail

Hail can occur anytime, even in the spring and summer and can be quite damaging if it is large. After any sudden extreme weather conditions, be sure to check your roof for repairs or problems. If you want to replace the roof before the winter descends, think about contacting construction and scaffolding companies, such as Essex Scaffolding at a site like B G Scaffolding, leading Essex Scaffolding suppliers.

Heat

You do not have to worry about it too much during the British winter, but you may be surprised to learn that heat can damage the roof as well. Heat can cause materials to age faster than normal and have an effect on both the inside and outside. If you have shingles, excessive heat can cause them to tear or crack, affecting the ventilation and temperature inside your home.

Rain

This is something that we get a lot of here in the UK and if it is allowed to pool from time to time, the water can infiltrate your home causing terrible problems such as damp and mould. If your roof has visible dents or uneven surfaces, then watch them on the inside as well to check that even the smallest cracks do not cause you a big deal further down the line.
