Trekking is a very popular form of exercise but did you know that your furry, four-legged best friend might love it too? As modern dogs are descended from the wolf, it makes perfect sense that some breeds will relish the opportunity to run free and roam the wilderness. Here are some great reasons why your dog should join you on a day of hiking:
Relieve boredom – If your dog is showing signs of bad behaviour at home or partaking in boredom related activities such as chewing shoes or excessive barking then fresh air and exercise will work wonders and leave you with a tired dog.
Cheap day out – This is an activity that requires little in the way of cash and also little in the way of experience
Enjoy the excitement – What a thrill it will be watching your pet frolic in the new smells and sights and what a fantastic way to further bond with your dog.
Here are a few pointers if you are new to this activity:
Find a trail that allows dogs
Be mindful of your dogs manners. Is he or she good of the lead? Remember even a well-behaved dog can ignore a voice command once it starts chasing a rabbit! Be aware of other walkers, cyclists, horse-riders etc
Dog backpacks are a great idea if you are planning on a long hike. Remember though, a very small or very young dog will not have the strength and stamina for such a big day out. Your dog can carry his own water or food and will give him a real sense of purpose. Make sure it’s a good fit and won’t cause discomfort. Such items can be found at an online bushcraft store such as www.angloforro.co.uk.
A small supply of first aid equipment and plenty of water will also be needed. Dogs dehydrate quicker than humans so make sure your furry pal isn’t overdoing it.
After the trek, check your pooch for cuts or grazes and particularly ticks which can cause Lyme disease.
Not sure whether your pet is up to the challenge? Here are the best trekking dogs:
- Labrador Retriever
- Vizsla
- Siberian Husky
- Bernese Mountain Dog
- Alaskan Malamute
- Portuguese Water Dog
- Border Collie
- Australian Shepherd
- Rhodesian Ridgeback
- Mixed Breed (always the possibility of traits from other breeds)
However, any breed will enjoy a run out in the great outdoors but you know your pet so bear in mind any limitations they may have. Start gradually and build it up – if you have the stamina!
